How to make account on Upwork

Quick 8-step guide to make an Upwork account

Upwork

Go to Upwork and click Sign Up → “Work as a freelancer.” Choose freelancer, enter your email (or use Google/Apple), and create a password.

Confirm your email. Upwork will send a verification email — click the link to continue account setup.

Build your profile (do this carefully). Add a professional photo, clear title, a client-focused overview, your skills, employment/education, hourly rate, and portfolio samples. These are the main things clients check.

Set your services & rate. Pick one or more service categories and set an hourly or project rate. Be realistic when starting to build reputation.

Complete payment & tax info (so you can get paid). Add a payment method (bank transfer, PayPal, etc.) and provide required tax details for your country. Upwork shows the exact options when you reach that step.

Identity verification (may be required). Upwork commonly asks freelancers to verify identity with a government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, national ID, etc.). If requested you normally have seven days to complete verification or the account may be put on hold. IDs must include photo, name, birthdate — passports may not require address.

Understand Connects & proposals. You need “Connects” to submit proposals. New users get some free Connects but may need to buy more as you apply. There’s also an option to spend Connects to get identity-verified badges in some cases.

Start applying — write tailored proposals. Apply for jobs that match your skills, attach strong portfolio samples, and write concise client-focused proposals. Track responses and iterate on your profile and proposals.

Quick checklist before you hit “Publish”

Clear headshot (face visible).

Short, client-focused overview (what you do, who you help, results).

At least 2–3 portfolio items or work samples.

Correct location and payment/tax names matching your ID (helps verification).

Government-issued ID ready (photo + required fields) in case Upwork asks.

If you want, I can:

Draft a profile title + 150–200 word overview for your niche (tell me your services).

Review a proposal template you plan to use and make it stronger.

Which of those would you like me to do now?
